Wherever I travel, it is with the intent of finding the natural beauty of an area. If I’m visiting more populated areas, I’m looking for the structures and people who call the place home. This month I’m writing about Prescott, Arizona, one of my favorite places. Within the city limits, there are several beautiful lakes and parks. Specifically, Watson, Willow and Goldwater lakes.
The aerial shot shows Watson Lake on the lower left and Willow Lake on the upper right. As you can see, they are right in the midst of the city, the famed Granite Dells and civilization. AZ-89A runs between the two lakes. From ground/lake level, you would never guess that you are in a metropolitan area. These lakes are reservoirs and in addition to the recreational activities they provide to the residents and visitors, they provide water to the city as well.
The great blue heron was perched on a rock in Watson Lake about 200 feet from shore in the Granite Dells that are part of the lake. Unlike when we are on land, birds and other wildlife seemingly have no fear of humans when we are in a boat or kayak on the water. I was within 10 feet of him when I took the shot. On land, I would have been lucky to get within 50 feet of him. This makes a huge difference in the quality of the picture you get as you can be near full frame from up close, but less than half frame from a greater distance. This translates into greater detail in the image as you enlarge it. If you want to get the best shots, buy a boat or kayak and get on the water.
As seen from either on the lake or on the shore, the magnificent reflective scenes when the water is calm are stunning. From bald eagles to shorebirds, wildlife is abundant. There are always wild ducks on the lake. Some not so wild, hang around the docks and launch ramps waiting for food from visitors.
Enjoy these photos, and then go experience the lakes for yourself. Walk the trails around the lakes or launch your boat or kayak and enjoy.
