Animal and bird movers and shakers are largely invisible to us, but they are here and do have an impact. These are apex predators that oversee the balance of nature. In some areas of the country, these predators have all but been eliminated. Mostly because of the interest of humans. By eliminating cougars and mountain lions from much of the East Coast, deer populations have exploded, and they wreak havoc on crops and forest land when their numbers are high. Reintroduction of wolves in the West is beginning to reshape the landscape here, and in particular, the reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone, which has significantly altered it for the better. Check out YouTube videos on this event. Photo 1: (Featured at the top of this page) The American Bald Eagle is pretty much at the top and feeds on everything including rabbits, ducks, fish, small game and animals. These birds also have been known to relieve other predators of their meals.

Photo 2: Bobcats are indispensable in maintaining a balance. They thrive on rabbits, squirrels and other small animals, including mice and rats. They’re good to have in the neighborhood. Trust me on this one.

Photo 3: The Red Tail Hawk is a common sight as it soars over fields looking for prey, mostly small animals and the occasional rabbit.

Photo 4: We very seldom see cougars, but they do inhabit the area and feed on deer, rabbits and other small and mid-size game. All cats are strong hunters and can take down prey seven times their own body weight. Every time you see one of these creatures, remember how they fit into the overall environment.
