Summertime and BBQ are a perfect combination. There’s something about hot weather, long, sunny days and savory, lip-smacking BBQ that we’ll always love. That’s why we were thrilled when Doc’s BBQ & Whiskey Sedona opened in the Village of Oak Creek last year. Doc’s – named after Western icon Doc Holliday – declares that it offers “Texas tradition in the heart of Arizona.” That translates into really tasty ‘cue served in a light-filled restaurant that comes complete with warm wood floors and beams.
The BBQ Plates are our personal go-to orders. The Six Shooter is a decadent platter featuring smoked brisket, ribs, pulled pork, turkey, choice of a Texas sausage link or jalapeno cheddar link and a thick slice of TexAZ toast. If you want a little bit of everything, this is the ideal option. We couldn’t get enough of the tender ribs and smoked turkey served with savory, vinegary BBQ sauce. Plates also come with a side of fries, coleslaw or beans along with your choice of sauce. One of our favorite indulgences? The TexAZ Twinkies appetizer. Dig into bacon-wrapped jalapenos stuffed with cream cheese and brisket. When you’re looking for a filling, crispy, soft and spicy snack, this will satisfy you. Plenty of the sides at BBQ restaurants are also excellent. We loved the Smoked Mac-n-Cheese. Smoked over mesquite daily, this side was creamy, cheesy and had just a dash of smokiness to make it truly great.
The menu is rounded out by burgers, salads and sandwiches. We were pleased to see a Black Bean Burger here. At most BBQ spots, it’s nearly impossible to find any vegetarian options. This burger was hearty, thick and a simply delicious burger, topped with lettuce, tomato, onion and mayo. For dessert, we just had to order the Banana Pudding. A specialty here, Doc’s take on this classic Southern recipe included layers of just-sweet-enough vanilla pudding, sliced bananas and vanilla wafers topped with a generous layer of whipped cream. The dessert was light, indulgent and a sweet finish to a hearty, crowd-pleasing meal. − A Sedona Foodie
