La Vecina (“neighbor” in Spanish) is one of Sedona’s newest restaurants that opened earlier this year. La Vecina is from the Shugrue Restaurant Group, which is behind The Vault and Broome & Orchard. La Vecina serves contemporary Mexican food in a modern setting. The exterior’s signature feature is its U-shaped windows that feature views of Sedona’s red rocks. Sit outside on the patio if you can as the views are totally worth it. We can never resist queso, and La Vecina Queso features thick and savory white cheddar queso, fajita beef and guacamole that customers can enjoy with corn tortillas. We found this to be irresistible. Another fantastic option was the Loaded Nachos. Crisp, fresh chips were topped with shredded pork, sliced jalapenos, pico de gallo and a heap of sour cream and guacamole – this made for one hearty starter.
For our first entrée, we just had to try the Baja Fish Tacos. These tacos were topped with generously sized portions of lightly fried tilapia, fresh pico de gallo and drizzled with a spicy chipotle cream for a hot touch. Speaking of portion sizes, all of the burritos on this menu are great when you’ve worked up a healthy appetite. The Steak Burrito proved to be more than filling. The rolled tortilla was stuffed with tender steak, rice, beans, pico de gallo, guacamole and cheese that were all portioned out just right with each bite packing a flavorful punch.
On a subsequent visit, the Quesabirria was a must-order dish. If you’ve never had birria, put it on your list. Birria is a type of Mexican meat stew that’s typically made with beef and simmered in a variety of spices – infusing the meat with heat and making it tender. La Vecina’s version of this trendy dish is moist birria-style brisket folded into four corn tortillas with melted cheese. We enjoyed dipping our tortillas in the perfectly seasoned birria. Overall, La Vecina has a fun vibe that’s reflected in the drinks menu. Customers can order mezcal, tequila, beer and a variety of cocktails. We loved our Cucumber Jalapeno margarita, which tasted refreshing, spicy and was a fabulous way to wrap up our visit. − A Sedona Foodie
