If you’re looking to shake up your fitness routine, consider exercising up in Flagstaff’s ponderosa pine forest. Flagstaff Extreme Adventure Course offers three different courses high up in the tree tops that visitors can tackle. Guests can move their bodies in different ways via zipline, rope ladders, climbing walls and wobbly bridges that are all suspended in Flagstaff’s ponderosa pine trees. Visitors are in a harness the entire time to ensure that they won’t fall. Expect to exercise your upper body, lower body and test your balance in a fun way. The course has both physical and mental benefits.
“You can test your limits, or you can stay in your comfort zone while doing it,” says Sadie Thorell, who does marketing for the course. She tells us that their clients are not just super fit people. The course is designed for individuals of varying physical abilities. “The biggest benefit is mental strength, for sure,” she says. The kid’s course is for children ages seven to 11 and features 16 obstacles, ziplines and ladders. Adults are not allowed on this course. The zipline course features a total of 32 ziplines and claims to be the largest in the west. The adventure course is for individuals ages 12 and up and features a total of five courses – each one contains 12 to 18 obstacles – that increase in difficulty and height as you progress. Courses are linked, but you can also take breaks after you’ve finished one. Prior to attempting any course, participants watch a 30-minute demonstration that’s led by a guide where they teach you about safety and how to use your gear. Guides are also on the ground the entire time and give guidance.
“I saw so many people conquer their fears and as a group together, it’s a really bonding experience,” says Sadie. “I’ve had people come in just to get over their fear of heights and end the day having the most confidence they’ve ever had.” Sadie has seen individuals, a bridal party, couples on dates and family reunions come to climb. On busy days, as many as 200 people will attempt the courses. Trying out a new activity can be a great way to challenge your body and to have fun in the process. “Most people leave feeling like a sense of accomplishment,” says Sadie. “It’s like an oasis in Flagstaff.” – Teresa K.
