West Sedona
Adobe Grand Villas (American)
Dining at Adobe Grand Villas might be Sedona’s best-kept secret, though chef Michael Merilli, who has been in Sedona for more than 10 years, does have a devoted local following. If you’re staying at the luxury bed and breakfast, Michael can prepare dinner in your private villa. For the rest of us, reserve a table on the patio with its pool views and colorful potted plants. The restaurant is BYOB, and there’s no corkage fee. We started with a crispy potato cake crafted with leeks and bacon and garnished with rosemary. For the next course, we opted for the warm spinach salad that featured bacon lardons and was drizzled with balsamic vinaigrette. For the main course, one of us had the pretzel-crusted salmon accented with Creole mustard and buerre blanc. It was every bit as good as that description sounds, showcasing perfectly cooked salmon accented with the carefully constructed textures of the grainy mustard and silky beurre blanc. Another of us had the asparagus and shrimp risotto. It was surprisingly light but full of vibrant flavor with a generous portion of shrimp. The Angel Kitchen & Japanese Market (Japanese)
A nice hot steaming bowl of ramen topped with vegetables, meat or fish is so comforting and an all-around crowd-pleaser. The dining room is light-filled with windows all around and a light-wrapped cactus constructed out of wood for some desert charm. For those who prefer an al fresco meal, this restaurant offers a handful of tables out front and a few in the back. The food menu features a variety of bowls and ramen. All bowls include stir-fry vegetables including bok choy, napa cabbage, carrot and chef’s special pickles. Bowls are topped you’re your choice of grilled chicken, cod fry, grilled salmon, vegan curry, karaage or Japanese fried chicken, renkon or lotus root ball and deep fried tofu. For our lunch, we opted for the Shoyu Ramen – one of the three options – featuring soy sauce soup with corn, bok-choy, napa cabbage, broccoli, carrot and egg. Any ramen fan knows that the most important ingredient is the broth. And this broth is a real winner – it’s rich, perfectly seasoned and silky smooth. The ramen menu is completed with Miso and even a Tomato version for adventurous diners. Vegan and gluten-free options also are available. The market is to the left of the cash register. Here, you’ll find a variety of Japanese foods and products. We spotted rice crackers, “Bell Rock” cookies in the shape of the titular and iconic red rock formation and a variety of cold beverages. Bella Vita Ristorante (Italian)
Bella Vita Ristorante combines a charming atmosphere with fresh, homemade Italian fare. Quaint interior details include a real fireplace, warm red walls and chandeliers that will make you want to linger. The menu focuses on homemade pasta, fresh seafood, meats and desserts made in house. Wanting to sample everything, we started with the fresh Caesar, made the traditional way with egg yolks and white anchovies. Our entrée was the Bella Vita Bistecca. This Angus ribeye was served in a hearty and rich wild mushroom brandy sauce over a chianti demi glaze, making it a quintessential Italian dish. The decadent Torta di Cioccolato dessert was too tempting to pass up, so we shared a slice of the flourless, bittersweet chocolate cake, served with strawberries, mint leaves and whipped cream. The Bistro (American)
If you’re dining at this comfortable and casual eatery for breakfast, expect traditional favorites along with breakfast sandwiches. The lunch and dinner menus feature salads, sandwiches, barbecue ribs and roast chicken. Open daily, 6:30 to 10 a.m., for breakfast; 5 to 10 p.m., for dinner. • 4105 W. Casa Sedona Inn (Breakfast and Brunch Only)
We’ll let you in a secret: Casa Sedona Inn serves one of the best breakfasts (and brunches) in town. This quaint West Sedona inn features breathtaking red rock views. Our favorite place to enjoy this stellar breakfast is outside so we can take in those vistas while we enjoy our first meal of the day. This is one of the last few weeks when the temperature is ideal to dine alfresco under the trees and red umbrellas. Although inside when the fireplace is on is cozy too. Executive Chef Eloy Garcia strives to create well-balanced meals. We love all the hearty entrees on the menu. Come hungry. We simply can’t get enough of the decadent Truffle Brie Scrambled Eggs, truffle scrambled eggs dotted with smoked salmon rosettes with creamy brie that’s also served with green onion and parsley. The entire dish is smothered in hollandaise and served with a side of house potatoes. You can never go wrong with the Lemon Ricotta Pancakes, another one of our go-to orders here. The sweet ricotta makes these pancakes thick and the lemon balances the cheese out. They’re served with potatoes, your choice of eggs (we always order over easy) and topped with berry compote or syrup. We’re partial to the berry compote that complements the savory lemon. For brunch, try a more classic breakfast entree like Crab Cake Benedict. Dig into an English Muffin topped with avocado, spinach and a poached egg plated beside a well-seasoned flaky crab cake. One of the most creative brunch orders is the Mayan Quiche. Made with bacon, cheddar and Boursin cheese, roasted tomatoes and spinach, the entire hearty creation is served alongside vanilla bean cream and bruleed grapefruit for a sweet contrast to the eggy quiche. For more filling lunch options during brunch, try the Steak or Shrimp Tacos or Chicken Enchiladas. Cap off brunch with the Orange Crème Brulee. We love cracking into the fired sugar crust that gave way to creamy, rich custard flavored with savory orange. No matter what you order, you’re guaranteed to be satisfied when you’re dining at the Casa Sedona Inn. ChocolaTree Organic Oasis (Vegetarian)
Who isn’t focused on eating healthy nowadays? ChocolaTree satisfies your wholesome, organic, vegan, gluten-free cravings with dishes like the Mushroom Fantasy featuring sautéed mushrooms in a garlic-almond sauce served over wild rice. We also like the Avocado Herb Sandwich, creamy herbed pate, avocado, tomato and seasonal greens sandwiched in between two slices of the eatery’s signature onion flat bread. When you’re finished, check out the market and the selection of raw chocolates, which are made on-site. Open daily, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., for lunch. Coffee Pot Restaurant and Gift Shop (American/Southwestern)
If you’re a breakfast lover, there’s no spot in town quite like the Coffee Pot, which has been giving Sedona mornings a jump-start since the 1950s. It’s all comfortingly familiar; what you might not expect is the inventiveness of the 101 omelets that are the Coffee Pot’s signature. We love the fluffy, veggie-rich Zucchini, Mushroom, Spinach, Tomato and Cheese Omelet, served with a choice of crispy hash browns (our pick), home fries, grits or cottage cheese, plus toast or a homemade biscuit. Dahl & Di Luca Ristorante Italiano (Italian)
One look at the lush interior – part intimate stone wine cellar, part luxurious rococo Italianate villa – and you’re in another world. We loved the hearty Lisa’s Luscious Lasagna – featuring stacked layers of tasty bolognese sauce, Italian sausage, ricotta, mozzarella and parmesan cheese – and an intensely rich, beautifully presented Vitello Botticelli, with shrimp delicately arrayed over thinly sliced, perfectly sautéed veal with mushrooms, tantalizingly spiced with thyme, basil and garlic in Marsala sauce. Fiesta Mexicana (Mexican)
If you’re looking for traditional Mexican favorites like ginormous burritos, enchiladas, fajitas and chile rellenos, you’ve come to the right spot. There’s even a kids menu. Located at Ambiente − North America’s first landscape hotel that opened in February of 2023 − Forty1 is the property’s on-site restaurant that offers top-notch cuisine in a sleek setting. The restaurant is located by the scenic pool. Inside, you’ll find expansive windows showcasing Sedona’s red rocks, scenic pool and cubeshaped rooms dubbed atriums here. The restaurant also contains a sleek bar that glows at night with blue lights illuminating the bottles on the shelves. The restaurant’s Executive Chef David Duncan put together a special multi-course menu that our group enjoyed. We kicked things off with a colorful salad and Wild Caught Blue Shrimp Aguachile. We delighted dipping the large shrimp into the aguachile that was perfectly spiced with just the right amount of heat. Next up, we enjoyed another family-style offering of a Surf and Turf plate along with an Ahi Poke Bowl. We couldn’t get enough of the fresh ahi that was served on top of pearl couscous. The dish also included a slide of sliced, fresh avocado sprinkled with furikake. For our entrée, we opted for the Sea Bass. This flaky and moist white fish was served with delectable arancini, a green pea puree, spring onion, daikon and a yuzu beurre blanc. The yuzu sauce was artfully drizzled on the plate after it was put on the table for a dramatic touch. What we loved most? The international flavors woven into most of the dishes. The craft cocktail program is of some note. We enjoyed a few, but our absolute favorite was the Tootsie Roll Espresso Martini. This sweet and savory libation was made with Tito’s Vodka, Mr. Black Coffee Liquor, espresso cocoa bitters, simple syrup and marshmallow. Lastly, we delighted in the light Lemon Trifle dessert. This dish featured passion fruit gelee, fresh strawberries and dots of dulce de leche that was all on top of a bright yellow lemon curd. The entire creation was dusted with shortbread cookie crumble. We left feeling full and happy to have dined at an outstanding Sedona restaurant. Open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Valet parking only. Fresh & Natural Thai Kitchen (Thai)
Helmed by noted Chef Pearl Pardee, Fresh & Natural Thai Kitchen has been on our must-try list since it opened back in 2019. We love the modern and bright setting of this fast casual Thai restaurant. Enjoy your meal outside on the patio that features a babbling water fountain and watch the cars whiz by on AZ-89A. Inside, discover a contemporary space that comes complete with orange walls, wood ceilings and lightly colored tables that add warmth to the restaurant. Find healthy, fresh Thai food that’s also peanut and dairy-free on the menu. True to its name, we couldn’t get over how fresh everything tasted. Like all the produce had just been plucked from the farm. To start off, we ordered Steamed Chicken Dumplings. We delighted into biting into these warm, hearty dumplings that were perfectly steamed. We also enjoyed the colorful, fresh and crunchy green salad served on the side along with a dipping sauce that made for a beautiful plate. Speaking of another eye-pleasing presentation, we couldn’t get enough of the Spicy Shrimp Salad. We dug into the oversized wok-seared large shrimp mixed in fresh lemongrass, red and green onion and cilantro. The shrimp was served on a bed of mixed greens and herbs that was all tossed in a mild chili shrimp and lemon dressing. The dish was spicy, refreshing, and the spicy shrimp paired well with a well-balanced, light salad. Next, we decided to try the Wild Salmon Delicacy. Another colorful dish, this entrée featured blanched salmon that was carefully seasoned with turmeric, garlic, cumin and black pepper cooked in a rich and bright yellow sauce of coconut milk and yellow curry. What we love most about Thai food is the variety of spices that make these healthy options delectable, and this perfectly spiced dish more than exceeded our expectations. We can’t think of a better way to end a night here than by finishing your meal with a warm cup of tea. Open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.; 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday to Sunday. Gerardo’s Italian Kitchen (Italian)
Established in 2016, Gerardo’s Italian Kitchen menu by Chef Gerardo Moceri includes pizzas, calzones, house-made pasta dishes, using house-made Mozzarella cheese and farm to table, “slow food” principles. Gerardo’s also features daily specials. Gerardo’s is known for its authentic wood-fired pizza made on the restaurant’s custom made Valoriani Tuscan pizza oven with pizza dough made from organic, artisan and whole wheat flour. Meats are sourced from U.S. family farmers and ranchers. Diners can enjoy pasture-raised 100 percent grass fed beef. No reservations. The Golden Goose American Grill (American)
The Golden Goose American Grill exudes a cozy bistro-vibe. Think tea lights on every table. Colorful glass plates of all shapes and sizes hung on one wall. We also love the intimate bar and dog-friendly patio of this local haunt. For appetizers, we had to start with the Southwest classic, Yucca Fries. These cactus fries taste like thick, steak cut potato fries with a hint of sweetness that’s tempered by the accompanying tangy chipotle dipping sauce. The Golden Goose is well-known for its steaks and seafood. Experience the best of both worlds if you order the Filet and Shrimp, a 6-ounce certified Angus beef tenderloin paired with tiger shrimp and basted with lemon butter. Finally, our server brought out an impressive dessert tray showcasing all of the Golden Goose’s handmade sweets. We opted for a slice of decadent, layered chocolate mocha cake. Consider pairing your final course with one of four coffee cocktails – specialties here – like the Mexican Coffee – coffee, Kahlua, tequila and whipped cream. Hiro’s Sushi Bar & Japanese Kitchen (Sushi/Japanese)
Nestled in West Sedona, you’ll find a quaint sushi restaurant offering something for everyone. Entrées include a sweet Chicken Teriyaki served over steamed white rice and sprinkled with sesame seeds. If you fancy a fresh bite from the sea, Hiro’s serves up a selection of sushi nigiri, sashimi and various specialty rolls. Our taste buds were pleased with the local-inspired offerings like the Red Rock Roll – spicy tuna with shrimp tempura and cucumber topped with albacore, garlic soy and green onion – or the Sedona Roll – spicy tuna roll topped with two pieces of tuna and salmon. India Palace (Indian)
Right now, we’re all about the Chicken Tikka Masala entrée at this traditional Indian eatery. Chunks of boneless white meat chicken and red bell pepper are served swimming in an orange-red tomato and butter sauce. The sauce is smoky, the chicken is tender, and it’s best ordered with a side of basmati rice. For vegetarians, we always recommend the Vegetarian Dinner, which includes small-ish portions of vegetable korma (squash, peas, carrots, green beans and cauliflower in an orange cream sauce), saag paneer (spinach cooked curry-style with homemade cheese and cream), dal maharani (a sort of lentil stew), raita (a cold, thin yogurt), basmati rice and naan, an Indian flatbread that is ideal for soaking up all the fragrant, flavorful sauces on your plate. Jay Bird’s Chicken (American)
One of the biggest food trends of the last few years is Nashville hot chicken. That trend has landed in Sedona with the opening of Jay Bird’s Chicken in West Sedona. Overall, Jay Bird’s is fun. The space is light-filled and colorful – bright yellow chairs fill the dining room. You pick your spice level first. Levels range from plain jay to fire. We opted for medium. We decided to go with the classic Chicken Sandwich & Fries for lunch. Although the “hot” in hot chicken is what tends to get the most attention, what actually makes hot chicken great is the quality of the meat. Our chicken was tender, just spicy enough and literally fell off the bone. The pickles and coleslaw on the sandwich tasted fresh and added a nice crunch. The spicy crinkle cut fries were seasoned just right and accompanied by your choice of sauce including Comeback Sauce, Big Sexy Sauce, Buttermilk Ranch and Smoked Tomato Ketchup. On our next visit, we just had to try the Mac Daddy & Fries. This seven-ounce chicken breast was topped with mac and cheese. This classic side is made with white cheddar and is one of the creamiest versions of the side we’ve ever had. This sandwich embodies what Jay Bird’s is all about: totally decadent and fun. Come hungry if you want to attempt to finish this colossal entrée. If you’d prefer another fun way to enjoy Jay Bird’s mac and cheese, try ordering the Blazin’ Fries. The signature crinkle cut fries are topped with the mac and cheese and one chopped tender spiced to your liking. This is a meal unto itself. The menu is rounded out by chicken tenders, chicken and waffles and choice of sides including Spicy Fries, Loaded Potato Salad and Coleslaw. Judi’s Restaurant & Lounge (American)
From the stellar cuisine to the warm and welcoming environment, it’s easy to see why Judi’s has been in business for decades. Your meal kicks off with bread service and your choice of soup or salad. We’re fans of the Greek Chicken Salad, a char-broiled chicken breast served over fresh salad, roasted red peppers, pepperoncini and Feta cheese. Steaks and surf options dominate the menu (you can’t go wrong with the near-legendary Baby Back Ribs), but we opted for the hearty Chicken Parmesan. We loved the contrast of the light angel hair pasta, marinara sauce and well-seasoned chicken topped with warm mozzarella cheese. Made-from-scratch desserts are another highlight. We can’t recommend the Butter Brickle Chocolate Chip Cream Cheese Pie enough. Los Rosales (Mexican)
Traditional Mexican dishes along with burgers, malts, shakes and smoothies are on the menu at Los Rosales. If you’re in the mood for soup, try La Campesina, which features poblano chiles, onions, corn and shredded chicken in a spicy, clear broth. The taco plates come with three tacos wrapped in flour or corn tortillas. Choose from steak, beef, slow-roasted pork, marinated pork or chorizo. Homemade salsa is served on the side. Mariposa Latin Inspired Grill (Latin)
Visually stunning from the dining room to the patio, Mariposa boasts a menu inspired by Executive Chef Lisa Dahl’s travels through Argentina, Chile and Uruguay. Think steaks, veal, rack of lamb, lobster and shrimp paired with creative sides such as creamed-kale casserole with bacon and caramelized onions. Mesa Grill (Southwestern)
Grab a table next to the panoramic windows that look out over Sedona Airport and watch the planes land and take off, or take a seat on the patio that boasts the same spectacular vistas. The extensive menus at Mesa Grill focus on favorites like stacked sandwiches and thick burgers alongside fish, steak and pasta. For appetizers, we’d have to recommend the truly epic Tableside Guacamole. This towering appetizer is made with two avocados, pico de gallo, jalapeno, red onion, cilantro, fresh lime, cotija cheese and peppers. During our lunch visit, we noshed on Executive Chef Mercer Mohr’s Mesa Fish-Wich, the Parmesan-crusted Red Snapper topped with Creole remoulade and jalapeno slaw was tangy, spicy and crunchy. For dessert, you’d have to pick the Coconut Key Lime Pie. This is a silky and solid rendition of the classic, crafted on a coconut-and-graham-cracker crust. It’s sweet and tart and everything a good KLP should be. Nick’s on the West Side (Mexican)
This locals’ joint has a reputation for breakfast served all day, authentic Mexican dishes, cold beer and fair prices. Our recommendations include the Chili Cheese Rellenos served with red and green sauce, rice and black beans. The Pulled Pork Sandwich is another favorite. Cooked to order, the sandwich is served with choice of fries, coleslaw, cottage cheese or fruit. Wash it all down with a glass of beer from Oak Creek Brewing Co. Picazzo’s Healthy Italian Kitchen (Italian)
Organic, gluten-free, whole-grain cuisine is the focus at this bustling eatery. The chopped kale salad with sliced almonds, dried cranberries and Parmesan is legendary among our friends, but if you’re in the mood for pizza we recommend the Chicken Bacon & Herbs, featuring cherry-wood-smoked ham over olive oil, garlic and mozzarella, topped with dried cranberries, smoked bacon, thyme, rosemary and basil. For vegetarians, the classic Puttanesca is topped with artichokes, feta, Kalamata olives, olive oil, tomato, garlic, basil and mozzarella. All pizzas are available on gluten-free original, gluten-free vegan, organic original or organic-whole-grain crust. Pisa Lisa (Italian)
It’s all about the wood-fired pizza at this casual joint. Start with Lisa’s Tomato Bisque soup and then share a Melanzane Parmigiana pie topped with the house-made sweet-and-spicy marinara sauce, provolone, mozzarella, ricotta, grilled eggplant, crushed red pepper and oregano. Not enough cheese? Don’t worry, it’s also topped with Parmigiano-Reggiano. Open Thursday through Monday, 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. (10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday), for lunch and dinner. • 2245 W. Rascal (New American)
We’ve been enjoying chef Mercer Mohr’s stellar cuisine for years, and his latest venture, Rascal at the Wilde Resort and Spa, is another dining gem in his restaurant portfolio. The bar area features a bright green ceiling and pink wall underneath that made for a fun setting. We can never resist bread service. We started dinner with the Hot Flakey Rolls. These aptly named warm croissants were easy to tear and complemented well by the tangy whipped citrus butter and orange marmalade. The menu features many gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options. We ordered the colorful White Bean Hummus that was served bento-box style with tabbouleh salad, fresh mint, extra virgin olive oil, chili spice, cucumber, carrots, celery, marinated olives and grilled pita bread. This appetizer made for a hearty and healthy start to our meal. We just had to try the creative Ahi Tuna Nachos. We delighted in every scoop of this chilled cold dish featuring a delightful, texture rich mix of ahi tuna tartar, fresh ginger, mango, shallots, green onions, ponzu, sesame, avocado, jalapeno, wasabi and Sriracha crème that was served with crispy spiced wonton chips. For our next course, we devoured for the hearty and rich Plum Tomato Soup that warmed us up on a chilly day. Don’t miss this dish that’s garnished with sweet basil pesto. For our other main course, we had to try out the Crispy Fried Chicken. The chicken was perfectly fried, crispy and tender. The meat inside was moist and fell off the bone. This main dish was also served with spicy jalapeno coleslaw, a cup of soup and a honey butter biscuit. As with all Mercer’s restaurants, Rascal also has a great dog menu. To end our meal, we had a totally decadent slice of apple pie, one of the best variations we’ve ever tried. Each bite was worth savoring, like this restaurant. Sedona Crepes Bistro (French)
Crepes have been popular for hundreds of years, and it’s easy to see why. The thin pancake-like creations are tasty, easy to make and can be filled with savory or sweet ingredients and taste delicious either way. That’s one of the many reasons we were thrilled when Sedona Crepes Bistro finally came to town. It’s high time Sedona had a spot devoted to this classic creation. Before its current location, Sedona Crepes started out in the former home of Relics but traded that historic spot for more modern digs across the street. The restaurant was bustling for a random weekday morning. To start off, we just had to try the classic Nutella crepe. The crepe was stuffed with sweet Nutella, strawberries and bananas and dusted with almonds. For a final flourish, the crepe was artfully drizzled with Nutella, whipped cream and dusted with powdered sugar. We loved the healthy ingredients that made this sweet crepe feel more filling. Each bite was savory, sweet and the perfect way to kick off a morning. On another visit, we quickly devoured the Dulce de Leche crepe – filled with cream cheese, cinnamon, sugar and completed with a drizzle of the crepe’s namesake. Each and every forkful of this crepe was sweet and balanced out by the savory cream cheese. The savory crepes here are all tasty and served with your choice of soup or salad. The Veggie option – stuffed with mushrooms, red pepper, tomato, fresh mozzarella, basil and topped with lines of glaze balsamic – turned out to be a hearty and healthy option that was just right after a long hike. The Tinga is our other favorite savory variety. This spicy crepe features chicken cooked in hot chipotle sauce, caramelized onions and topped with sour cream and queso fresco. When we’re looking for an indulgent, savory crepe, this is our go-to. The menu is rounded out by painini, tacos, breakfast options, create-your-own omelets, salads, three entrees and a long list of burgers. The Classic burger is easily one of the best burgers we’ve ever had. Just don’t leave without trying the truly excellent crepes. Steakhouse 89 (Steakhouse)
Steakhouse 89 sits at a landmark location in West Sedona. We encourage you not to miss it (as if you could) for a fine dining experience. As you might have guessed from the restaurant’s name, meat is the name of the game here. And this is a place where you’d return to get your meat fix. All of Steakhouse 89’s beef is USDA Prime. During our dinner, we enjoyed a perfectly cooked filet and prime rib and tender meatballs. We also thoroughly enjoyed vegetable and seafood dishes with modern twists. We savored the roasted Brussels sprouts with Brie cheese, pepitas and cranberries. Our party also loved the crispy-skin salmon seasoned with a citrus glaze and accompanied by succotash and sweet corn puree. One of the most surprising plates of our meal? A concentrated flavor-packed, palette-cleansing cherry sorbet that we’re still thinking about months later. Our meal concluded with one of the restaurant’s signature desserts, 89 Cheesecake. The day we dined here it was a lemon-flavored slice that was everything you could want: decadent, rich and an entrée you’d order again. Szechuan Chinese Restaurant (Chinese)
Szechuan Restaurant has been a Sedona staple for years and is well known for its tasty Chinese food nd sushi. We’ve been ordering from here for a while and have always been impressed with the cuisine and service. The well-lit restaurant includes a sushi bar on one side of the restaurant along with a handful of tables on the other side. We don’t know about you, but we think the appetizers at Chinese restaurants are always stellar. Szechuan is no exception to this rule. We kicked off our latest meal with an order of juicy Pork Fried Dumplings stuffed with pork, cabbage and onions that was served with a tangy dumpling sauce. Next, we had to have the Fried Cheese Wontons. We delighted in every bite of these crispy wontons filled with imitation crab meat, rich cream cheese and green onions. We popped in on a chilly day and warmed up with a bowl of the Hot & Sour Soup. A mix of mushrooms, eggs, bamboo shoots, carrots and tofu were all in a spicy broth that warmed us up. You can never go wrong with an order of Fried Rice here. The Orange Chicken was also excellent. The white meat was served with a tangerine peel and dried chili peppers served in a sweet and savory orange sauce that we couldn’t get enough of. For lighter fare, try the sushi rolls. We love the classics like the Spicy Tuna Rolls and the Avocado & Cucumber Roll as much as we delight in more creative rolls like the Golden Shrimp Roll. This hearty sushi roll is made with tempura shrimp, cucumber and avocado and then dressed up with roe, eel sauce and spicy mayo. It’s a delightful mix of savory and spicy flavors. Vegetarians have a number of options. Veggie-centric orders include Sizzling Tofu, Kung Pao Cabbage and Mixed Vegetable Delight – a medley of broccoli, cabbage, mushrooms, carrots, water chestnuts, pea pods, tofu and bamboo shoots in a white garlic sauce. Cocktails are also noteworthy. Our-go order is the Mai Tai. Consider ending a night at Szechuan with a slice of light cheesecake made with a graham cracker crust and topped with fresh berries. The Sundowner (American)
It’s easy to drive right past The Sundowner without realizing it even exists – this place is a true locals’ watering hole. The menu is basic, inexpensive and tasty. Think burgers, fries, onion rings, Philly cheesesteak sandwiches, fish tacos, hot pastrami, corndogs, salads and appetizers. Open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., for lunch and dinner. Tamaliza (Mexican)
Who says Mexican cuisine can’t be healthy? Tamaliza doesn’t cook with lard, the masa is made with organic, non-GMO corn flour and everything is handcrafted from scratch. (Check out the garden in front of the folksy cafe. That’s where some of the ingredients are grown.) We are big fans of the Tamale Supreme topped with guacamole, black beans, raw spinach, cheese, salsa and sour cream. Choose from vegan, vegetarian, pork, chicken and beef tamales. Thai Spices Natural Restaurant (Thai)
This local favorite is always bustling with diners, even on weeknights. We started with a chicken Fresh Roll Wrap: organic mixed greens and fresh herbs wrapped in rice paper served with plum sauce and crushed roasted peanuts. Our main course was the Pineapple Curry. Diners pick their spicy level and choose mild, medium or hot. We went with mild and happily feasted on the dish–a sweet and spicy mix of shrimp, pineapple, onion, carrot, broccoli, red bell pepper in coconut milk and Thai red curry sauce. We couldn’t leave without trying the Thai iced tea. Served over ice with cream, the strong, sugary tea was a perfect foil for the spicy food, and it satisfied our sweet tooth. Tortas de Fuego (Mexican)
The handful of tables at this small Mexican joint fill up quickly with locals and visitors feasting on favorites such as burritos, enchiladas and crunchy tacos. But we head to the eatery for its namesake item: tortas, or Mexican sandwiches. There are no fewer than 20 to choose from, but our favorite is the spicy Torta de Fuego topped with pork, steak, ham, bell pepper, lettuce, grilled onions and a jalapeno mayonnaise. Wash it down with a Mexican Coke. Open daily, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., for breakfast, lunch and dinner. • 1630 W. Vespa Healthy Italian Café (Italian)
It’s easy to see why Sedona has fallen for Vespa Healthy Italian Café. For starters, the contemporary restaurant is gorgeous. It’s light-filled and airy, which makes it easy to enjoy a meal here. Pinsa romana is a specialty here. This type of pizza requires the dough to be leavened for up to 72 hours and gives the pie a light and airy texture. We opted for the Genoana. Topped with pesto, slow-roasted tomatoes, mozzarella, olives, onions and parmigiano cheese, we loved each and every bite of this savory and salty vegetarian pizza. When it comes to appetizers, you can’t go wrong with the classic Bruschetta Capri or bread topped with tomatoes, mozzarella, basil and balsamic. It’s a classic combination of flavors that always delivers. The sandwiches here are all so simple and tasty. The Crudo & Fichi, a delightful mix of cream of brie, prosciutto, arugula, fig preserve and balsamic glaze, proved to be a refreshing mix of sweet and savory. When we’re searching for indulgent comfort, we love the Lasagna Al Forno. This take – filled with Bolognese ground beef, mozzarella, tomato sauce and parmigiano. We’re also coffee fanatics, and the espresso here is fantastic. Pair your rich, smooth espresso with one of Vespa’s stellar desserts. We’re particularly fond of the Tiramisu – another classic Italian dish – this delectable dessert is layered with espresso, ladyfingers, whipped egg yokes and cane sugar crema – that Vespa has mastered. Vino Di Sedona (Wine Bar)
Vino Di Sedona is a destination for wine and craft beer enthusiasts alike. Guests can find a vast selection of over 900 wines and 50 craft beers hailing from all over the world on the shelves. They can pair their drinks with a selection of hearty wine bar food. Visitors can snag a few seats indoors, but the outdoor patio really shines. Located out back from Sedona’s main drag, AZ-89A, the expansive, dog-friendly patio is a delightful place to sit outside while you enjoy food, wine and live music. We love discovering new finds here. Sweet and light mead is one of our favorites. We’ve also enjoyed many an Arizona red out on the patio. Our go-to? The Cabernet Sauvignon from Arizona Stronghold. Drinks are served alongside inventive fare. We’re partial to the Smoked Ahi Tacos. Served chilled, these light tacos are made with crunchy watermelon radish shells and topped with ahi tuna, scallion and fresh dill. The charcuterie boards are another highlight. Dig into a selection of meats and cheeses alongside bread and fruit. We personally delight in the Genoa Salami, which is both sweet and savory. The rosemary and olive oil asiago cheese is bursting with flavor and is a must-try selection. Flatbreads are another fantastic option. The last time we dined here, we dug into the Tuscan. Topped with house-made marinara, mozzarella, sun-dried tomatoes, pesto, Parmesan and fresh basil, we delighted in the mix of savory Italian ingredients. The desserts are all made from scratch. The light Meringata – meringue smothered in whipped cream over a coffee jam mascarpone buttercream – is our preferred order in the warm summer months. The Flourless Chocolate Cake is what we order when we want to indulge. The bar is open Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. (11 p.m. Thursday through Saturday); Sunday, 3 to 10 p.m. for lunch and dinner. The kitchen closes one hour before the bar does.
