A piece of Arizona was sealed in a time capsule slated to be opened in 2276. Each state contributed a piece to the America250 Time Capsule – created to celebrate this country’s 250th year – and Arizona’s was a handcrafted copper ingot. Seventeen-year-old artist Riley Hammett designed the piece, which represents the state’s rich mining history and pioneer spirit. Jerome-based Desert Lace Studio crafted the copper ingot using traditional techniques. “This project represents far more than a piece of copper,” said John Maeder, co-owner of Desert Lace Studio. “It tells Arizona’s story through art, craftsmanship and the vision of a talented young artist. Being entrusted with creating the state’s official contribution is an incredible honor, and one we will always cherish.” The ingot was buried at Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia on July 4 and will be reopened in 2276.
