TENDING THE FLAME
New Exhibition by Bryan David Griffith at The HeArt Box
Opening Reception: Friday, November 21, 6–8 PM
Exhibition Dates: November 21, 2025 – January 4, 2026
Flagstaff, AZ — As the days grow shorter and we move closer to winter, The HeArt Box invites the community to gather for a new exhibition by interdisciplinary artist Bryan David Griffith. Tending The Flame opens with a public reception on Friday, November 21 from 6–8 PM, and will remain on view through January 4, 2026.
During the long nights of winter, cultures across the world have gathered around the warm light of fire, imbuing it with ritual and meaning. In Tending The Flame, Griffith explores this timeless impulse through the lens of creativity and resilience. Using fire itself as a medium, he examines the delicate relationship between nature and humanity, creating works that juxtapose geometric forms with organic energy. The result is a visual meditation on control, disruption, loss, and ultimately—healing.
Griffith’s exploration with fire began with his involvement in a group project in 2015, Fires of Change, sponsored by the Southwest Fire Science Consortium, and has evolved through continued research and exhibitions across the western United States. His process reflects both the physical and emotional landscapes shaped by wildfire—destruction giving rise to renewal, darkness giving way to light.
Tending the Flame will embody its theme by transforming over time. The opening reception will debut a special piece on view for only two days, November 21 and 22, as part of the nationwide movement Fall of Freedom, which calls upon the creative community to take action on those dates to highlight threats to freedom of expression. Following the opening weekend, this work
will be replaced with others, with a new iteration on view December 5 for First Friday Art Walk from 5-9pm, and another before the show’s closing on January 4th. An Artist Talk will take place on December 13th from 5-6pm, offering deeper insight into the artist’s process and evolving vision.
About the Artist
Bryan David Griffith is an interdisciplinary artist whose work navigates complex social and environmental issues through the use of elemental materials and minimal forms. After earning a degree in engineering and working in management consulting, Griffith made a radical shift—leaving corporate life to follow his conscience and pursue art full time. Traveling the country in an old van, he found himself stranded in Flagstaff when the van broke down, and soon discovered both a home and a muse in the surrounding landscape.
A past winner and four-time finalist for Flagstaff’s Viola Award for Excellence in Visual Arts, Griffith’s work is included in the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Phoenix Art Museum, University of Michigan Museum of Art, Center for Creative Photography, and Fort Wayne Museum of Art. His recent solo exhibitions include the High Desert Museum, Fresno Art Museum, and Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum.
The HeArt Box is located in downtown Flagstaff, offering a space where art and community meet to spark connection, inspiration, and shared reflection.
