Dining With Wildlife

There’s only one place in Sedona where you can dine with wildlife and share the same fine meal that they have, and that is at the Rainbow Trout Farm in Oak Creek Canyon. The trout in the pond are raised in raceways on another portion of the property in pure spring water and then transferred into the main pond, which is also pure spring water.

You can come for a visit and just observe or participate and catch your own trout. Then you can opt to have the fish filleted for you and either cook them on the property or take them home to enjoy there. This is the same choice that wildlife makes with the fish that they take from the pond. Don’t be surprised if one of these creatures comes in for a meal while you are there. Photo 1 (at the top of this page) shows an Osprey who has just dropped into the pond and snatched a trout and is now on the way out to dine in a tree nearby.

Photo 2 is of a Great Blue Heron that has just speared a beautiful Rainbow Trout and is on his way to the shoreline to consume his catch. Photo 3 shows a Common Black Hawk lifting off with his catch firmly grasped in his talons as he heads over to a tree stump in the picnic area adjacent to the pond, where he enthusiastically begins to eat his meal.

Photo 4 is a closeup of the Black Hawk as he finishes the last few morsels of his trout. He’s satisfied and sure to come back.
