A Cool Place

Photo 1

Northern Arizona is a totally cool place in all respects. It’s a cool place to be with temperatures to match. Photo 1 (featured at the top of this page) was taken at 11,931.4 feet MSL (Mean Sea Level) whilst over the Arizona Snowbowl and looking upwards to Humphreys Peak, which is 12,637 feet MSL. The trail to the top is clearly visible.

Photo 2 was taken maybe about 100 feet above Humphreys Peak, and you can see a group of climbers who have just made it to the top. They appear to be resting and taking photos before making their way down the mountain. I did a couple of flybys, and waves were exchanged. I should have thrown out some cards and might have received some photos in return.

In photo 3, we are looking at the San Francisco Peaks from about 30 miles to the Southwest. In the foreground is Rogers Lake, which is an important part of the flyway and a wonderful wetlands area to visit during the spring and fall migration times. The peaks are a wonderful playground during all seasons. Especially during the hot summer months, with a temperature drop of 5.5 degrees Fahrenheit per 1,000 feet, it is about 30 degrees cooler at the top than in Flagstaff.

Photo 4 is a bonus shot of Sunset Crater, which is just east of the San Francisco Peaks. It is the most recent of the more than 600 volcanic cones in the San Francisco Volcanic Field. It covers about 1,800 square miles on the plateau.

Photo 5 is home. It’s the Sedona Airport, with KSEZ and 123.00 on the radio. I love this place!
