Day of the Dead and the Marigold Mural Project

Day of the Dead

One of Sedona’s most literally colorful events is returning to Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village this fall from Oct. 29 to Nov. 2. Expect to see Tlaquepaque’s fountains, streets and patios transformed with colorful décor as part of the celebration of the Day of the Dead or Dia de los Muertos, a celebration of lost loved ones based on the beliefs of ancient Aztecs. “We want it to be a cultural event where people come, they walk around, and they enjoy what they see,” says Wendy Lippman, managing partner and general manager of Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village.

Guests can anticipate seeing plenty of new vibrant installations – including one of iconic artist Frida rising out of a tree of life – all throughout the property. New this year is a six-or seven-foot spirit animal. The paper mache creature will feature a dynamic combination of jackrabbit ears, a rat’s body, gecko hands and a lizard’s tail. “It will be vivid beyond belief,” says Wendy. “Everybody has a spirit animal, and they’re usually a minimum of three animals. And they kind of represent different parts of your soul, your essence.”

The Day of the Dead seeks to honor the memories of lost loved ones. Altars will be displayed throughout Tlaquepaque. Feel free to bring photos or mementos of lost loved ones to place on the altars as a way to honor their memories. New this year, BowWow Pet Boutique will have a pet altar that pays tribute to animals that have passed.

The biggest change to this year’s festival is the Saturday celebration. There won’t be an evening celebration, but attendees can look forward a huge Aztec installation, live music and flamenco dancers in the afternoon. Kids and adults can also make and decorate sugar skulls. Festive costumes are also encouraged. The Day of the Dead also coincides with the Marigold Mural Project. Professional artist Lovejoy will create a 26-foot long mural to kick things off, and visitors can add to this mural with provided paints and brushes throughout the week. From arts to culture, expect to learn plenty during this event. “It’s a learning, educational opportunity,” says Wendy. “We are trying to just engage people, educate people and show people other traditions.” − Teresa K.
