Travels with Ted: Sedona in the Winter is Heavenly

Sedona in the winter is heavenly. Here are three of my favorite Sedona in the snow images. Top photo: A view of Red Rock Country, the Mogollon Rim and the Colorado Plateau. The photo was taken from over West Sedona looking to the northeast in December. Prominent is Wilson Mountain, one of only two actual mountains in the Sedona area; Wilson was formed by a series of volcanic eruptions and upwards thrusting from a series of earthquakes. The volcanic cone is on the backside of Wilson overlooking Oak Creek Canyon. A portion of Uptown Sedona is visible in the lower right corner. On the horizon from left to right is Kendrick Peak, the San Francisco Peaks and Mt. Elden overlooking Flagstaff.

Looking to the north from Airport Mesa on a snowy winter day. In the foreground, a layer of snow coats the edge of Airport Mesa and in the middle ground, West Sedona and Uptown are covered in a blanket of snow. It was quiet. Wilson Mountain is the ultimate destination in red rocks and snow. It’s a perfect place to be and easily accessible from the overlook on the mesa.

A private jet has just landed on runway 21 at Sedona Airport, bringing visitors into Sedona for a visit on a stormy December day. We get a lot of private aircraft at the Sedona Airport and have an active group of local pilots who fly out of here as well. A beautiful welcome to a beautiful destination. Sound goes up and having the airport on top of Airport Mesa reduces the sound impact on the local area. Of all the airports I have flown in and out of, this is my favorite one, and that is over a 25-year span.
