Oil painter Elizabeth Silk has been a professional artist for nearly 30 years, and she always wanted her own gallery. Her dream became a reality when her eponymous gallery opened in Hozho Distinctive Shops & Galleries in November. “I’ve been in other galleries in the past, but I’ve always wanted my own to make my legacy,” says Elizabeth, who’s lived in Sedona for 24 years. You can expect to find many of Elizabeth’s signature creations. She mostly focuses on painting animate creatures like horses and people in deep, vibrant swirling colors. Her father is Native American, and she frequently paints Native Americans as passionate, proud and strong. Elizabeth also makes Native American astrology cards that also go into detail about your astrological sign’s power animal.
Locally, she hopes her gallery will bring “an injection of spirituality. Part of what I do is I’m an art therapist. I do work with people: emotional healing, spiritual healing,” she says. She says that many people tell her they’ve been affected by her paintings and describe a feeling of “healing” in response to her work. Elizabeth tells us that visitors can see her live painting to music on the weekends. She wants to stay open later on the weekends since so few local businesses do. Look forward to hearing guitar players, flamenco guitar, acapella singing and up-and-coming musicians. “One thing is we’re going to be amazingly friendly. Just very peaceful atmosphere, wonderful ambiance,” says Elizabeth.
Another highlight: Elizabeth Silk Gallery will exclusively sell work from noteworthy Las Vegas artist, Brad Wilkinson. Brad is renowned for creating live oversized paintings using a splatter painting technique in a suit and his velvet loafers. In addition to artwork, you also can find one-of-a-kind Native American drums, jewelry and candles. Future plans include adding sculpture, floral service and expanding the 800-square-foot gallery. She’d also like to open additional locations. “Today Sedona. Tomorrow the world,” Elizabeth says. − Teresa K. Traverse
