We’re always happy to check out a new restaurant, and we were particularly excited to try Sono Kitchen & Boba in Uptown Sedona. In case you’re not familiar, “boba” are the tiny bits of (usually) tapioca found in these drinks. But the word boba often refers to the refreshing, tea based drinks that were invented in Taiwan back in the 1980s. And the popular beverage has arrived in Sedona.
Sono Kitchen & Boba is a bright, contemporary space with white ceilings that exudes a welcoming vibe. We couldn’t help but smile when we walked in and saw a little yellow cat character on the wall “waving.” The cat is also on Sono’s cups. Take a seat outside and sip your drinks with a red rock backdrop. Sono’s caters to furry friends too and will bring your dog a water bowl upon request.
One of the signature boba drinks, the Matcha Boba Tea, had just the right amount of green tea and was not overly sweet. If you’ve never tried it, most boba is almost like drinking a smoothie that’s just a little diluted – its thick in consistency with just a dash of sweetness from milk that’s tempered by tea. The boba themselves were fresh and chewy, but not too hard. If you’d just like regular tea, Sono also serves black, green and oolong tea. The drinks menu is rounded out by a variety of smoothies that come in flavors like strawberry, mango and peach.
But one of our favorite aspects of this shop is that it’s not limited to just drinks. Sono also serves a small food menu of specialty Asian food. The portions are generous and complemented the drinks perfectly. We couldn’t get enough of the chicken fingers and snackable, bite-size salt & pepper popcorn chicken; both dishes were fried just right. The roasted cauliflower was just crispy enough and a good vegetarian option. If you’d like a full meal, Sono’s also serves bento boxes that come complete with your choice of protein, rice and fruit. We’re excited to have boba in Sedona, and we hope Sono is here to stay. − A Sedona Foodie
