Wood-fired pizzas are the name of the game at the Village of Oak Creek’s Rotten Johnny’s. And this place delivers – both literally and figuratively. Customers choose from red, meaning that the pizza has crushed Italian tomatoes, or white pies, meaning made without tomato sauce. What we loved most about the pies were that the crust wasn’t too thin or too thick – but just right in the middle. Each bite of crust was crispy, yet moist, a truly winning combination. We split our pizza with The Standard, or classic Marghertia and Capocollo. Both made with local produce and meats from Niman Ranch. We couldn’t get over how fresh all the ingredients on the Marghetia tasted. The Capocollo topped with tomato sauce, mozzarella, Niman Ranch capocollo and Mediterranean olives really packed a dynamic flavorful punch, with each ingredient complementing and never overpowering one another.
Our personal favorite menu item was the customer-favorite Cheesy Garlic Bread. This appetizer as almost an entire meal in and of itself, as our attentive waitress informed us before we ordered. The rectangle-shaped, hand-held bread topped with cheese and garlic accompanied by a side of marinara was simple and palette-pleasing, making this one perfect starter. The generous portion sizes here make this ideal for a group of people or for someone who wants leftovers. Wings, meatballs, appetizers including the notable buffalo mozzarella, salads and sandwiches typically complete the menu here.
To finish, we ordered a slice of flourless chocolate cake served with caramel sauce and four dollops of whipped cream from the rotating dessert menu. This made for one decadent dessert with a satisfying gooey center. Given how tasty everything on this menu is, we hope this place is here to stay. − A Sedona Foodie
