For such a popular instrument, it’s (probably) rare that you’ll hear an acoustic guitar all that often. But you can change that on Nov. 24. On that Saturday, Chamber Music Sedona is kicking off its 37th season with a “Star of the Guitar” performance from world-renowned classical guitarist Ana Vidovic.
“A solo guitar is a wonderful genre unto itself,” says Nicholas Canellakis, artistic director of Chamber Music Sedona. “The opener is a solo guitar recital by one of the foremost classical guitarists, really in the world.”
Croatian-born Ana has quite the musical background. She became the youngest student ever to attend the prestigious National Musical Academy in Zagreb, Croatia, at age 13. She has performed all over the world and now resides in the United States.
“She’s really a tremendous virtuoso. She plays with great lyricism and beauty. The program has an incredible range. If you love the Spanish guitar, you’re going to get that in the program. If you love Bach, you’re going to get that,” says Nicholas. “Her program travels around the world. I would say that, in many ways, the variety and the program is going to make this concert very special.”
This premiere performance will be your only chance to hear acoustic guitar during the Chamber Music Sedona’s upcoming season.
“As artistic director, the thing that I look for in the planning season is balance for the audience. And another word for balance is ‘variety.’ To make sure each concert is a little bit, if not very different from the last,” says Nicholas. “In the later part of the season, we have piano quartets, piano trios, cello, piano, sonatas, string quartets. And so to start off, I thought the most contrasting thing to that kind of repertoire is the guitar, which isn’t going to appear again during the season.” − Teresa K. Traverse
