Rodeo is a quintessential Western experience. And it doesn’t get more Western than Prescott Frontier Days, which has been up and running since 1888 and touts itself as the “World’s Oldest Rodeo.” Typically, more than 35,000 people attend. From July 1-7, you can watch eight different rodeo performances at the Prescott Rodeo Grounds. Whether you’ve been coming for years or are considering attending for the first time ever, the rodeo has something to offer you. “Every rodeo is different. Every performance is different,” says J.C. Trujillo, Prescott Frontier Days general manager.
New this year? Specialty act John Payne, who is known as “The One Arm Bandit.” As his nickname suggests, he lost his right arm after being electrocuted in a construction accident. Despite his severe injuries, Payne was determined to stay true to his passion and ride horses. And now he’s one of the most decorated rodeo pros. The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association has recognized him as the Specialty Act of the Year a dozen times.
Besides Payne’s show, rodeo attendees can look forward to the grand entry, bull riding, women’s barrel racing and bareback riding. Events are timed or professionally judged based on factors such as how well the cowboy handled the horse. Besides the show, attendees can look forward to a variety of vendors. Dig into typical fair food including hamburgers, hot dogs and Mexican food. And shop for goods with a Western flair including boots, hats and jeans. But no matter if you’re watching rodeo or shopping for new boots, remember to enjoy the show. “We feel like we’re one of the best rodoes in the business,” says Trujillo.
