Music To Our Ears

Winterfest

Chamber Music Sedona’s 6th annual Winterfest concert is mixing things up this year. The festival culminates in a concert on Jan. 13 at 2:30 p.m. at Sedona Performing Arts Center. Dubbed Shepherd on the Rock, the performance features Sarah Shafer (soprano), Alex Fiterstein (clarinet) and Roman Rabinovich (piano) performing music by Franz Schubert as well as the unexpected Leonard Bernstein and even George Gershwin. It’s the contrast between the traditional chamber music and the more contemporary songs – with vocals nonetheless – that has Nicholas Canellakis, Chamber Music Sedona’s new artistic director, excited.

“This concert is tailor-made for anyone who loves vocal music,” says Nicholas. “Even if you’re on the fence about it, you should come out because it’s going to be beautiful. It’s different to have vocals mixed with chamber music, but what people might not realize is that some of the greatest chamber music there is has vocals.”

In addition to the main concert, Winterfest, which begins Jan. 10, includes an intimate salon performance in a private home (tickets are $125), a concert for area schoolchildren, masterclasses for Sedona middle- and high-school students and a dress rehearsal on Jan. 12 at 10 a.m. that is open to the public. Tickets for Shepherd on the Rock are $40 for general admission and $60 for reserved seats. For information, call 928-204-2415 or visit chambermusicsedona.org.
