Loving Bowls

We bet that you’ve (probably) never seen 1,500 handmade ceramic bowls in a single space. But you can change that on Dec. 14. That’s when the Sedona Arts Center is hosting one of its signature annual events, the Loving Bowls. “It’s just stunning when the door opens” says Dennis Ott, head of the ceramics department of the Sedona Arts Center. But what’s even better than just seeing gorgeous bowls everywhere: this event benefits the community.

Bowls cost $10 each. Proceeds from Loving Bowls benefit local organizations including the Sedona Community Center, Sedona Food Bank, the Sedona Humane Society and the educational programs at the Arts Center. New this year? 50 salad-sized bowls. The other bowls are cereal-sized. Another new feature: All of the bowls receive two glazes by a master couple that has worked with Dennis for 10 years. “We put two different color glazes on top of each to create a beautiful starburst looking effect,” says Dennis.

Even though this is predominately a fundraiser, you don’t have to purchase anything to attend. Everyone who shows up will get a bowl of chili, a dessert and a water bottle. A silent auction will also take place. Up for auction includes bronze sculptures, pottery, handblown glass, golf at Seven Canyons and meals at local restaurants. Volunteer potters create most of the bowls for sale. They start in March and wrap up in October.

“What I love about it is it’s a community event. It’s not an Arts Center event. It brings in people from the community. It’s during the holidays. We decorate the hell out of the place. Nobody has to buy anything. We’ve seen people we’ve never seen,” says Dennis.“It’s a feel-good event.” − Teresa K. Traverse
