Chasing The Storm

The Sun Setting at the North Rim by Scott Stulberg

“Listening to the deafening roar of thunder and watching monster lightning bolts parade over the Grand Canyon was one of the best experiences of my life as a photographer.” Scott Stulberg describes the moment he was waiting for, as he watched the fury of a monsoon cross over the canyon. He had a split second to grab his camera and capture the shot he had only ever dreamed about. That photograph appeared on the front pages of National Geographic Visions of Earth as a two-page spread. “Being at the right place at the right time doesn’t always happen, but when it does, it’s the best feeling in the whole world,” he says. “The Grand Canyon is a place where everyone on Earth needs to visit, sometime in their life. It’s a wonder of the world for a reason!”

Scott was born and raised in Los Angeles beneath the lights of Hollywood. His father was president and chief operating officer of 20th Century Fox, and gifted him his first camera at the age of 10. Family friend and mentor Melvin Sokolsky, a distinguished fashion photographer, encouraged Scott to explore his creativity. “Melvin’s fashion work and portraits are so inspiring and in another league altogether,” says Scott. “He made me realize that you have to be as creative as possible, using your mind’s eye to come up with work that is powerful, different and sets you apart from others.” Scott says that his photography is about vision, ideas and the willingness to allow his imagination to go wild.

Scott and his wife, Holly, who is also a photographer, moved to Sedona several years ago in search of a more serene environment. They both travel the world, capturing iconic photographs for major publications and stock-photography agencies. Scott will lead two workshops, After Glow: Shooting After Dark and The Art of Creating Panoramas, at the Sedona Photography Symposium Aug. 22-25.
