If you’re reading this in northern Arizona, a medically progressive part of the world, it won’t surprise you to hear that research done by the Cancer Centers of Northern Arizona has indicated that cancer patients who pair nontraditional treatment methods (acupuncture, group therapy) with traditional methods (chemotherapy) have a higher rate of survivorship. That’s why the funds from Northern Arizona Healthcare Foundation’s 16th annual Copper Ball will benefit the cancer center’s complementary care program, says Heather Ainardi, the foundation’s special events manager. This year’s event takes place May 20 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the clubhouse at Seven Canyons. The theme for the Copper Ball is Tapas on the Rocks, alluding to the 10-plus restaurants that will offer small plates during the party. There will also be live music, wine and beer tastings, and a cash bar.
As of press time, participating restaurants include Seven Canyons, Enchantment Resort, SaltRock Kitchen and Craft Margaritas, Dahl Restaurant Group, Sedona Catering and Zenith Steakhouse at Twin Arrows Casino Resort. Heather says the foundation hopes to raise $80,000. In order to help achieve that goal, there will be a silent auction with items such as an Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta vacation, a Sedona golf package, Grand Canyon white-water rafting, Cactus Bowl tickets, oil paintings and jewelry from Sedona artists, and a tasting party for up to 20 guests from Spirits & Spice. The dress code is what Heather calls “cocktail casual,” and a professional photographer will snap photos of guests in front of the red rocks (the portraits are included in the ticket price). The Copper Ball complements the foundation’s more formal gala, the Turquoise Ball, now in its 58th year. That event happens in Flagstaff on Dec. 1, and the theme is A Night at Versailles.
“The Copper Ball is a relaxed event,” says Heather. “It offers a chance to spend time with friends in one of the most beautiful environments on Earth. If you aren’t a member of Seven Canyons, you probably don’t have the opportunity to spend time out there very often. The Copper Ball is indoors and outdoors, so you’ll have the chance to soak in the views.”– Erika Ayn Finch. Photo by Sean Openshaw Photography.
