Su Vino Winery
Tasting room: 7330 E. Main St. in Old Town Scottsdale (480-994-8466)
Su Vino, “your wine” in Italian and Spanish, got its start in Texas before a second location was added to Scottsdale, making it the first winery in the Scottsdale area.
Tom recommends: This Scottsdale winery is an offshoot of an operation that started in Grapevine, Texas, near my old stomping grounds. You might try the semi-sweet Sparkling Moscato for a refreshing summer quaff. It took a silver medal at the Arizona Republic Wine Competition.
Village of Elgin Winery
Tasting room: 471 Elgin Road in Elgin (520-455-9309)
This family-owned winery is the largest producer in the Sonoita region. The winery only uses grapes grown in southern Arizona, and it takes pride in producing wines in a traditional manner and by aging each one in European wood.
Tom recommends: The Village of Elgin Winery is one of the few in Arizona to utilize screw-cap technology for all of its wines. They make a number of sweet and semi-sweet wines. Look for the Festival Red, a wine they only serve at festivals.
Winery 101
Tasting rooms: 1019 N. Main St. in Old Town Cottonwood (928-487-1555) and 9299 W. Olive Ave. in Peoria (623-242-0340)
Irlyn and Gavin Gallifant, owners of Winery 101, first began making wine in 2008. The winery has expanded to include more than 20 varietals. The Gallifants only use grapes grown in Arizona.
Tom recommends: The newest tasting room in Old Town Cottonwood features two product lines. Try the South Paw Summer Sippin’ white blend (the blend changes every year) for a light, sweet refresher during our seemingly never-ending summer.
