Sedona’s Heroic Sandwiches

Open Range Grill and Tavern

Deluxe Mushroom Grilled Cheese, $14.99

Is there anything more comforting that an ooey gooey grilled cheese sandwich and a cup of tomato soup? Open Range Grill and Tavern ups the ante by using rich fontina cheese and a medley of sautéed mushrooms served on buttery, crispy herb bread. And this entrée actually includes two sandwiches, so your adult appetite won’t be left wanting thanks to your childhood nostalgia. As for the tomato soup, this isn’t Campbell’s condensed. The cup of tomato bisque is creamy and flavorful with the taste and texture of roasted tomatoes. It would almost be a sin if you didn’t dip your sandwich into the soup. Enjoy it on the restaurant’s open-air deck that offers up some of the best red rock views in town.

Sedona Memories Bakery Cafe

Turkey sandwich, $7.95

Tucked away on Jordan Road in Uptown Sedona, tiny, cash-only restaurant Sedona Memories serves some of the biggest sandwiches in Red Rock Country. This is where you go when you have an appetite (or if you want to split something with a friend), but locals know to get in line early because there’s a good chance your sandwich (or homemade bread) of choice will sell out before the doors close at 2 p.m. The Turkey Sandwich is a little taste of Thanksgiving year-round: fresh turkey, cream cheese, cranberry sauce, Swiss cheese, sunflower seeds, avocado, lettuce and sprouts. Bread choices include buttercrust, whole wheat (our favorite), French roll, rye, seven grain and sesame herb. Do whatever it takes to save room for a homemade cookie (if you call in your order in advance, you will receive a free cookie with your sandwich).

ShadowRock

Sedona Club Sandwich, $15

ShadowRock, the restaurant at Hilton Sedona Resort at Bell Rock, recently introduced a new executive chef, Chris Knightly. Chris is preparing to introduce a new menu this summer, but one item that won’t change is the Sedona Club Sandwich, one of the restaurant’s most popular lunch options. The sandwich is stacked tall with carved, smoked turkey; capicola; pecan-smoked, thick-cut bacon; melted provolone cheese; lettuce; and tomato. It’s served on toasted bread smeared with basil-pesto. You can also add avocado, something we always recommend. Part traditional club sandwich and part Italian grinder, there’s no way you’re going to leave the table hungry. The sandwich comes with your choice of side. We like the homemade potato chips.
