Any foodie will tell you that sometimes the tastiest morsels can be had in the most discreet locations. That’s the case with A Taste of Marrakech, which opened its doors in March. Tucked into a Village of Oak Creek strip mall between a barbershop and a hotel, the eatery offers organic, small-portion meals with a Moroccan flair. Seat yourself at a smattering of outdoor tables under colorful umbrellas or one of three tables inside. There’s a good chance the owner, Lucas Sena, will serve you. It’s just that kind of place.
The menu at A Taste of Marrakech features street tacos, flatbread tacos, veggie kabobs, salads and the pasta of the day. Over the summer, we became mildly addicted to the Falafel Flatbread Taco (the falafel is baked, not fried), but during our most recent visit we tried the Bison Brisket Flatbread Taco. The organic, slow-cooked, melt-in-your-mouth, shredded bison meat is topped with red cabbage, tomato and a slightly spicy Moroccan harissa sauce. It’s served on top of fluffy flatbread that’s folded like a taco. The bison is spiced with marjoram, turmeric and parsley, and though we aren’t typically into exotic meats, the combination of so many flavors left us craving more. We also ordered the Beef and Lamb Gyro. The tender gyro meat is topped with tomato, red onion and housemade tzatziki sauce. All items at A Taste of Marrakech come with your choice of side, and options change depending on the availability of ingredients. This summer, the watermelon-cucumber salad was our favorite. Black olives, red onions and cinnamon made the refreshing salad all the more intriguing. The sweet-potato hash with cubes of yams and sweet potatoes alongside plump raisins is also noteworthy.
A Taste of Marrakech serves wine and beer along with organic teas that can be ordered iced or hot. Smaller portions mean you aren’t stuffed at the end of your meal, so there’s room for something sweet. Desserts include an apple crisp, a gluten-free brownie with organic vanilla ice cream and the housemade tiramisu, which was our choice. The tiramisu isn’t cloyingly sweet like some we’ve tried; the coffee flavors really shine through. Welcome to the neighborhood, A Taste of Marrakech. Get used to seeing our faces at your tables. – Erika Ayn Finch. Photo by Deb Weinkauff.
