Sedona, Take Me Away!

Continued (page 2 of 3)

Take a Hike … in Oak Creek Canyon

Last summer, all of the hiking trails in Oak Creek Canyon (not to mention the creek itself) were closed until early fall due to the Slide Fire, so it has been two years since we’ve been able to hike the canyon during the lush summer months. West Fork is a perennial favorite, and it’s an easy hike, but we prefer some of the lesser-known routes including Telephone Trail. This steep, 3-mile hike includes views of the Peep Holes, a white sandstone formation containing “windows.” The trail begins on SR 89A near mile marker 385 on the right side of the road. It isn’t always easy to navigate this trail, so if you aren’t an experienced hiker, you might want to check out Harding Springs Trail, which climbs the east wall of the canyon, or even Allens Bend, a short, flat jaunt near the creek. For information on trails, visit www.sedonaredrock trails.com or call the Red Rock Ranger District at 928-203-2900.

Take Your Kids … to Out of Africa

School’s out for summer! Grab the family and head to Camp Verde and Out of Africa Wildlife Park. Witness tigers splashing in a swimming pool. Take the African Bush Safari Tour where you’ll get up close and personal with giraffes and zebras. Check out the Predator Feed when caretakers dole out more than 800 pounds of raw meat, or even touch a snake during the Giant Snake Show. The park offers chances to interact with the animals including feeding a tiger during the popular Tiger Splash performance. There’s also the park’s newest attraction: the Predator Zip Line. This 2.5-hour tour has you zip lining from tower to tower (seven towers total), high above Out of Africa’s resident critters. There’s also the shorter Zippin’ Safari Tour that includes the Racing Raptor, a 1,000-foot-long zip line. For more information, visit www.outofafricapark.com or call 928-567-2840.

Take a Peek … at the Winemaking Process at Page Springs Cellars

Yes, you love to drink wine, but do you know how it’s made? Page Springs Cellars offers tours every Friday, Saturday and Sunday at noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Visitors learn about the history, culture, farming methods and the process of winemaking by visiting the estate vineyards, cellar, barrel room and crushpad. Of course, no winery tour is complete without samples. Tours include a flight of five wines plus a special tasting pulled directly from the barrel. Tours are $20 and include a souvenir glass ($10 without the tasting or the glass). Reservations are recommended. Page Springs Cellars also offers tours during harvest season, which usually occurs in late summer. For more information, visit www.page springscellars.com or call 928-639-3004.

Take a Shot … at Plastic Surgeons of Northern Arizona

Curious about the latest and greatest dermal fillers? Plastic Surgeons of Northern Arizona has offices in West Sedona and the Village of Oak Creek. It offers several different types of fillers including Restylane, Voluma and Juvederm. (Botox – still one of the most popular cosmetic procedures on the market – is also on the menu.) The fillers are injected into the skin to restore volume to the face and hands; they fill in hollows, folds and lines. The results last from four months to one year. Dermal fillers are performed as an outpatient procedure. For more information, visit www.psna.net or call 928-774-2300.
