The Sedona Arts Festival isn’t just a small art show that pops up on the side of the road. Not only is the festival the oldest of its kind in Sedona (it celebrates its 24th anniversary this month), it also draws one of the largest crowds of any Sedona art event. This year, the festival takes place Oct. 11-12 on the athletic field at Sedona Red Rock High School. It features 125 artists from all over the country working in 11 different art mediums.
The Sedona Arts Festival began in 1989 and was called the Apple Festival. Originally a family-oriented event, it has evolved over the years into a fine-arts show. The application process for artists begins in January with 300 to 400 applicants. In May, local artists and gallery owners review hundreds of images and score each artist on a scale of one to five, narrowing the list down to 125. The festival strives to spotlight new artists every year. Each artist will have their own booth where they display their work and meet collectors. Visit the Guest Gallery where international artist and special guest Porfirio Gutiérrez will present and sell his Zapotec textiles and fine weavings. The Gourmet Gallery will feature food and bath items that are crafted regionally.
“We started the Gourmet Gallery four years ago, and we wanted to offer something that’s just a nice thing to take home that’s not expensive so everybody can participate,” says Lori Reinhart, executive director of the Sedona Arts Festival.
Although the focal point is the artists, there will also be food, live music and a Kids Zone. Sedona Recycles is in charge of the Kids Zone and will lead crafts and art projects using recycled materials. The Sedona Arts Festival is also a fundraiser for area students. Proceeds go toward a scholarship and grant fund dedicated to local arts organizations and education.
“The more people that we get into the festival, the more we are able to contribute back to the community and give to kids,” says Lori. “The sole mission of the arts festival – besides bringing this great art show to Sedona – is that we financially support students who are pursuing the arts.” – Callie Kittredge
