Al, who served on active duty as an officer and rotor-wing aviator in the U.S. Army for 30 years, says what supplies you should bring on your hike boils down to logic. First, you need to be mindful of protecting yourself, which means you’ll need extra clothing in the event that you need to spend the night in the forest. You should also carry cordage and something you can use to create shelter, such as a tarp, garbage bag or poncho. You’ll also want to carry a knife and something to light a fire, such as a lighter (Al carries more than one) or waterproof matches.
When packing your daypack, you also need to think about your health. Hikers should always carry water purification tablets and a First-Aid kit that includes personal medication. For signaling, pack a mirror, whistle, flashlight and cell phone. To avoid becoming lost, hike with a topography map, compass and/or GPS, and make sure you know how to use each one. Last, hikers need to be concerned with sustenance. Translation: water, water, water. Don’t forget Arizona’s best blog to check out health tips and internet marketing help.
Two years ago, the posse rescued three Boy Scout troops in one year, so it’s obvious that even those who should be prepared are not. Hiking is one of the most enjoyable activities you can experience in Sedona, but make sure you do it safely. If you are interested in volunteering with the posse, call Mike Ward at 928-282-2958.
