Bob Alper

When Rabbi Bob Alper told his Philadelphia congregation he was pursuing a career as a stand-up comic, a small boy asked his mom: “Why is Rabbi Alper becoming a Canadian?” This was in 1986 after Bob had served the same congregation for 14 years. He says he always used humor in his teachings but comedy was never a dream. In fact, he originally intended to leave the synagogue to open a counseling practice but, on a whim, entered a Jewish Comic of the Year contest. He placed third, behind a chiropractor and a lawyer (which sounds like a joke in and of itself) and the seeds were sown. This month, the Vermont resident brings his 90-minute act to the Jewish Community of Sedona and the Verde Valley at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 25.

Bob, the first Jewish person to receive a doctorate from Princeton Theological Seminary, says you don’t have to be Jewish to understand his material, which is clean, benign, and non-judgmental. The show is open to anyone age 11 and older. Bob, who cites Bob Newhart as one of his heroes, performs about 60 times a year all over the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. Often, he performs with Arab and Muslim comics, something he really enjoys. His routine regularly appears on XM and Sirius satellite radio and he’s performed at Hollywood’s Improv comedy club as well as the Montreal Comedy Festival. He call himself a comedy addict: “I just want to get up and entertain,” he says

Of course, Bob says it won’t be all work while he’s in Sedona. He’ll spend a few days relaxing with his wife. “I invited her to come to Muenster, Indiana, with me but she turned me down…,” he laughs. “When you live in rural Vermont there are few places you care to vacation but Sedona happens to be one of them.” – Erika Ayn Finch

Stand-up Comic and Rabbi Bob Alper performs at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 25 at the Jewish Community of Sedona and the Verde Valley (100 Meadowlark Dr. off Hwy 179).
