Dry Creek Trail

What's in a name? A rainy season adds a new dimension to this Tranquil Nature walk

Dry Creek? You could have fooled us in early May- thanks to all the rain that drenched northern Arizona in the early months of 2005, this trail was fully rehydrated. We had to cross the rolling waters half a dozen times to stay on course, and at a few spots the drink appeared to be at least waist high.

But far from dampening our enthusiasm, the current revival only deepens it. Hopping from stone to stone is a breeze - go with the flow! And even if the water by now has receded and Dry Creek better reflects its name, we'll bet the environs make a splash all the same. The views along Dry Creek Trail surely are not the most spectacular in the area - the red rocks are absent for a significant stretch - but the hike makes up for it with an overriding sense of tranquility and harmony; it's a prime setting in which to enjoy nature on a beautiful day. In particular, we were cheered all along the way by blooming wildflowers that add flashes of bright color.

The trailhead sits at the end of 4.5 miles of unpaved FR152. The two-mile hike starts off easily on sure footing, and stays relatively unchallenging throughout. In the absence of rising water, the walk would be smooth sailing from end to end.

One word of caution if it is still wet: We noticed stagnant water with a lot of mosquitos buzzing the area in early May, so pack some insect repellent along with the sunscreen, just in case. We also saw a kingsnake slithering among some rocks; luckily, we realized it wasn't poisonous before we jumped out of our skin.

Directions: Take Hwy 89A southwest of the "Y" approximately 3.2 miles. Make a right onto Dry Creek Rd., continue about 2 miles. Make a right onto FR 152 and follow for 4.3 miles to the end. Park your car in the loop, proceed to the trailhead marked by a sign that reads Dry Creek Trail #52.
